Job Description

American Board of Pediatrics is currently seeking a DevOps Engineer for a 12 month contract/contract to hire position in Chapel Hill, NC.  This position offers the possibility of extension and/or conversion to full-time employment, if desired, as well as career growth and advancement opportunities.  

Summary:Responsible for the product release and deployment operation, the position is required to maintain frequent, incremental changes to code versions, which means frequent deployment and testing regimens. The position closely works with software developers, system operators (SysOps) and other production IT staff to oversee code releases. The person in this position must know and understand the IT infrastructure that's needed to support software code in dedicated, multi-tenant or hybrid cloud environments. The position may be required to provide required resources, select an appropriate deployment model, direct the testing protocol to validate release and monitor performance after release. Tasks may include preparing test data, analyzing results, troubleshooting problems and communicating issues back to development.

The position will work with development staff to tackle the coding and scripting needed to connect elements of code, such as libraries or software development kits (SDKs), and integrate other components such as SQL data management or messaging tools that are needed to run the software release on operating systems and production infrastructure. Working with business staff, the position may be recommending changes in business processes as needed to solve organizational problems and improve business outcomes.

The role of DevOps engineer must have the necessary hard and soft skills that are required to overcome the traditional barriers between software development, system implementation and configuration, and operations teams. The position may be involved in the development and implementation of enterprise architecture for product release and deployment for ABP business services and applications; work with application leaders for designing and implementing new enterprise level business applications for both the short-term and long-term, as well as from traditional Web platforms to Mobile platforms; and provide the industrial best practice and solutions for production releases and deployments. Leading the deployment teams of projects and performing all tasks within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) may be required. Additionally, the position will work with ABP staff to understand business requirements for product releases and deployments and ensure the timely release of applications and system solutions that meet timelines. Requires excellent leadership and communications skills.

Position Requirements:Education: Bachelors degree in computer science, information technology, or related fields required. Masters degree preferred.

Experience: 10+ years technology experience in the software development life cycle process; 5+ years in system/server/database administration; and 5-8 years of experience with a thorough understanding and proficiency in application deployment and product release.

Skills: Strong understanding and extensive experience in developing and providing enterprise solutions to meet complex multiple deployment and release of application and systems. Proficient in the tools for software and system deployment and release. Familiarity with all areas of software and system deployment and release, and project planning. Extensive experience with at least one core programming language (Java, C, C#, etc.) and a detailed understanding of system administration and database management. Proven experience in release and deployment processes.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for the product deployment and release process. Involved in the design and implementation of enterprise level deployment for ABP business applications services. Develop the strategies for product deployment and release for ABP’s online services and application solution for the long-term.
  • Provide the industrial best practice on deployment and release standards, policies, and frameworks at the enterprise level.
  • Familiarity with automation tools and technologies that are being deployed in the DevOps process and be able to deploy in the DevOps setup including Puppet, Chef, Jenkins, Salt, Ansible, Kubernetes, Docker, Kubernetes, Nagios, Cloud computing and storage platform, Infrastructure as Code.
  • Design and develop cost-effective processes for applications deployment and systems release.
  • Perform impact analysis of new projects release and deployment on existing systems and provide time and cost estimates.
  • Maintain and improve existing systems and processes related to product deployment and release.
  • Develop standards and guidelines to be used in the deployment of applications and systems.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new software and hardware solutions that are compatible with existing deployment systems.
  • Provide information needed for IT forecasting and budgeting.
  • Create functional and technical specifications for software project deployment and release.
  • Create project plans for projects and identify project risks related to product release and deployment.
  • Plan and prepare technical reports, memoranda, and instructional manuals as needed relating to software release and product deployment.
  • Work with appropriate IT personnel to design databases, logical views, and queries related to deployment and software release.
  • Monitor performance of programs after implementation.
  • Prepare weekly status report to update project owner and appropriate IT personnel of project status.
  • Assist IT staff as requested with miscellaneous requests and work orders.
  • Develop and document process release and deployment schedules.
  • Ensure project tasks and schedules are maintained and updated.
  • Provide technology solutions and options for critical issues being able to implement them in effective and efficient ways.
  • Assist IT management to develop both short-and long-term goals. Visualize goals, develop plans and communicate them to the team to align department goals with organizational direction.
  • Actively listen, being open to receiving constructive critiques on how to improve, by providing constructive feedback, and by proactively sharing information needed by other individuals and groups in the process.
  • Ensure properly documented team meetings through minutes that are distributed and reviewed and available to department staff.
  • Work with the IT project teams to ensure performance and quality of service.
