Job DescriptionThe purpose of this job is to develop engineering designs for mechanical seal equipment and associated technologies to meet customer requirements. This job requires the use of engineering judgment, and the application of standard engineering techniques to develop designs for customers’ use.  Focus is on the proper develop of designs and standards for the use of in a variety of applications.

  • Evaluate customer requirements including customer specifications, research the necessary data and determine cost effective materials of construction and appropriate lead time for the system.
  • Prepare quotation documents in alignment with customer requirements ensuring all customer requirements are addressed.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with customers, sales and company personnel providing counseling, recommendations and technical assistance.
  • Provide guidance to salesman and customers to complete the application for each seal support system.
  • Analyze designs and component part design, making recommendations for changes to the customer.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities will vary based upon departmental needs.
  • Comply with and ensure department compliance with Company health, safety and environmental policies.
  • Comply with all applicable U.S. export control and security regulations.
  • Additional duties as assigned
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience to include engineering design, instrumentation, manufacturing methods, and to obtain sufficient knowledge and background to assume senior responsibilities involved.
  • Working experience of relevant industry standards (API 682, API 614, B31.3, ASME VIII etc.).
  • Working experience within the Oil and Gas industry with experience or familiarity with API mechanical seal piping plans preferred.
  • Must be hands-on, highly motivated and energetic team player.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, changing priorities and reassign priorities to complete assignments.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Extremely high attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Must be able to sit for extend periods of time; a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Must be able to maneuver to all areas of the office, shop, warehouse, or manufacturing plant
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip items while working at assigned desk area.
  • Must have the manual dexterity and coordination to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives, changing priorities and reassign priorities to complete assignments.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues.

Work Environment
  • Work environment is typically considered within a Smiths location during normal or extended business hours to include offices, manufacturing plants and repair facilities.  Work environment may also include customer sites including oil well sites, and meeting venues.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and approved PPE is required when on the factory floor
